  • Questions to Ponder
_ I care about each of you. Make good choices within and beyond my classroom!!!
I am here to serve as a collaborator with you in seeking to develop your self-discipline, responsibility, and problem-solving skills. Our classroom with be based on mutual respect and cooperation.

Purdy's Requests / Rules

BE RESPECTFUL to others, self, and even non-living things (our campus, equipment, etc.). For a more detailed definition of respect, see the 120 pages of my master’s thesis. :-) Art is very subjective, therefore respect others opinions of art and their artwork – even if it is not your style.
BE HERE. Have your body and brain in the room for the entire class. Don't be late.
BE PREPARED. First and foremost, come to class with a positive mindset. Even if you have had a bad day, creating art can really make a difference. Also, be prepared with the proper materials: writing utensil, planner, sketchbook, and art project.
BE ON TASK. Arts help you engage your brain in ways that are not typical in other classes. Therefore, help yourself grow by working hard in class on projects, teamwork, and communicating maturely. No portable electronic devices (iPods, cell phones, mp3 players, etc.). No food in the art studio.
BE HONEST. As humans we all make mistakes. We can grow from those mistakes so don’t waste anyone’s time by lying, misleading, or telling half-truths to others.
BE DILIGENT. Work hard through challenges. Every “mistake” in art is an opportunity to try something new or different from the original plan. Don’t give up – persevere.
BE THANKFUL. Realize that you have a great opportunity to come to school here and live with great wealth. You are receiving an education that many only dream of achieving. Take advantage of the opportunity to develop your mind, character, body, and spirit during your inexpensive high school education. I have learned that the more thankful I am, the more I realize all that I have and that I am better than I deserve

Progressive Discipline Levels:

Level 0: Doing Great!
Level 1: Warning - verbal or nonverbal (an evil look from Mr. Purdy).
Level 2: Behavior Processing Form and phone call home.
Level 3: Lunch detention with Purdy and/or removal to ISS (in school suspension). Parent contact.
Level 4: Office Referral: conference with student, teacher, counselor, and/or principal. Parent contact. Action plan and possible removal from the class and loss of credit.

(The teacher reserves the right to jump levels as necessary - especially when there are safety concerns.)

Purdy does NOT permit:

racism.
whining.
tardiness.
laziness.
disrespect / backtalk.
the phrase "shut up."
touching someone else's art.

Teaching / Learning Strategies:

_ We use a variety of teaching and learning strategies that assist us in gaining a better understanding of art in our society. These strategies may include, but are not limited to:
  • Standards-based projects, feedback, assessments, and grading.
  • Problem-based studio projects.
  • Reflective writing.
  • Recording of ideas.
  • Research papers and projects.
  • Socratic seminar.
  • Critique of student, exemplar, teacher, and master artwork.
  • Local and international guest speakers and artists-in-residence.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaborations.
  • Field trips.
  • Art history study.

Presentation / Peer Critique Procedures.

Purpose:
> to publicly share one's art.
> to subjectively and objectively critique others' art.

Process:
> put artwork at the front of the room (or under the document camera).
> verbally define the meaning / purpose of your artwork.
> verbally describe your design process and elements/principles of focus.
> class to note objective facts about the artwork via written peer critique notes.
> class to give verbal subjective feedback via comments (strengths and alternative strategies).
> verbally define what you would have done differently with more time and/or resources.
> applause!

Progress Walk Around Procedures.

__Purpose:
> to formatively assess each others' projects.

> to share ideas in community learning environments.
> to apply feedback from others on your own art project.
_Process:
> spend 30 seconds at your own table looking at others' art.
> rotate to the next table (clockwise) for 30 seconds.
> rotate to each table.
> debrief subjectively: What do you like? What is strong? Why?
> debrief objectively: What successfully uses color so far? What art successfully uses unity so far?
> debrief application strategies (what will you do with your work?).

Guest Speakers.

Sometimes we have guest presenters for colleges and / or art-related careers.
  • 04/18/2012: Tassie Guthrie from the Art Institutes.
  • 04/11/2012: North Central Conference Art Show including potter Bill Mateer, painter / illustrator Paul Micich, architect Ken Wind, and tattoo artist Kyle Ries.
  • 01/11/2012: Kathleen Broderick from the Creative Center in Omaha, NE.

Safety.

_The art studio has tools that, if used improperly, can be harmful to humans. We use caution when working in the art studio with hazardous materials and tools. Also, materials, sinks, and floors are to be tidy before students are dismissed from class to prevent accidents from occurring. Students must have permission and supervision directly from the teacher to use the paper cutter and X-acto knives and blades. Absolutely no running, horseplay, or tampering with others’ projects is permitted.

Materials / Texts.

_Students are required to always bring a pencil, planner, your project, and sketchbook paper to class. Art materials may be checked out of the classroom by students at the teacher’s discretion. Students will be required to record what materials have been checked out using the teacher’s Art Room Materials Checkout Log.

Clay Procedures.

  1. Wash tools and scrape tables daily.
  2. Wrap clay in plastic daily to prevent drying out.
  3. Keep hands moist to prevent drying out.
  4. Clay does stick to walls, the ceiling, etc. DO NOT show us how.
  5. All clay can be recycled before it has been fired.
  6. Take your time for higher quality form and texture.
  7. Clay tools are never toys or weapons: Do not use the cutoff wire without permission.
  8. Clay does not come out of clothes easily: I highly recommend wearing an apron daily.

Team Clay Cleanup Jobs:

  1. Table checkers.
  2. Tool checkers.
  3. Apron / rag box checkers.
  4. Wheel checkers.
  5. Sink wipers.
  6. Distribution table wipers: also check the bags of new clay to make sure they are closed.
